The Supreme Court

Becoming a Chief Justice in the Supreme Court is a great honor. Though the public did not always respect the Supreme Court in the beginning 200 years ago, today it is seen as great power and opportunity for the United States of America. Rights have changed over the past 200 years since the Constitution was written such as the women's right to vote, or African Americans being considered citizens. The Constitution has remained the same though, and the words written back then help and guide the Chief Justice's make rulings in the Supreme Court. The words that were written so long ago still hold true to the problems the country faces today. Surprisingly, the Supreme Court gets 7,000 new cases each year, and they accept about 100 of those cases. The job does not come easy and rulings can always be seen as controversial.
This past week the U.S. Supreme Court made a decision in regards to a case about immigration. With a 5-4 vote, the Supreme Court allowed the Trump Administration to deny legal residency to low-income immigrants. These would be the immigrants that are likely to rely on public assistance programs. This is also known as the "public charge rule" or "wealth test". This can benefit the country in regards to immigrants using benefits without contribution. Americans value people being independent and self-sufficient. This will encourage future generations of immigrants to adopt those values as well.

The Supreme Court’s decision though has been controversial. The debate about immigration policies have been ongoing since the beginning of time. Immigrant rights groups are calling the rule unjust, while others are in favor of the ruling. The people need to realize the Supreme Court makes decisions based off of the Constitution and their knowledge and debate on rulings are made in a fair and just way. A lot of work, time and dedication goes into their decisions. They must be respected for this.
